I went to look at a possible pet and ended up with an almost dead puppy!?
Question by myson: I went to look at a possible pet and finished up with an nearly dead puppy!?
My husband and I were looking to adopt a pet that just needed a excellent home. We were looking for a puppy that would not be much more than a lap dog. We prepared by buying the things that a new puppy would need. Food, leash, toys, treats, dishes, everything. We even pre bought the vaccines ahead of time, and my aunt who is a dog rescuer would administer them for us. We did not plot on really adopting for at least another two weeks, when were going to draw on some investments to place away for the possibility of vet care down the road. I have not owned any animals since I was income with my parents. I thought we prepared accordingly.
We went to see a puppy that was in an add on the an Internet sight. The add said the puppy was for nephew but did not work out, and the people had huge dogs and were worried that they would hurt the pup. It also said dog is in need of shot now? (Why they did not get them I do not know). When the dog was brought out to us it was skin and bones. (all I thought was I need to get this dog out of here) It was still wet from its bath, and shivering. They did not tell us their name, and the puppy had no name. The puppy had no personal items such as a leash, collar, name, food, bowls, nothing!!! They handed him over and my husband and I looked at each other and the feeling was mutual. We assumed people would want to make sure the puppy was going to the excellent home they described in the add. My husband spotted dewormer meds on the counter. We have 3 small children, and sure enough after the dog ravenously ate, choked, and regurgitated his food his stool was covered in worm evidence. We were unaware of the worms until we looked all the info up, and found the descriptions of all the types of worms. The dogs doo has a grainy like white substance all through it, just loads and loads. He eats as if he is absolutely starving then has 2 bowel movements right after full no matter what that is. I do not see movement nor have I seen any full worms. I do not know what to look for though either. His coat and skin is really dry and is just flaking off. His coat is really, really dull and ragged. Gums are very pale. He just started to wag his tale, and he rarely plays at all. He does not wine, bark, yelp, nothing! His hind legs are not working very well, and I do not reckon that he can see properly. I do not know what type of wormer was used because all that was on my mind was get this small guy out of here. I called the humaine society and reported the incident because we heard two more dogs barking. I did not see the shape up of those dogs but was frightened for them. We cannot withdraw cash for in this area another week and a half. And at that we only were putting away in this area 500 and 50 each week following. Maybe I was not really understanding the cost in caring for a puppy, but I thought that to be plenty. I dont even know if this puppy will make it to next week. I reckon the apl would just place it to sleep, but I am not sure. I want to care for the dog, but do not even know where to start with nearly nothing until next week. My aunt said that even giving this poor guy shots right now might do more harm than excellent because his immune system is so terrible. I feel horrible, and I was perfectly unprepared for this. I do not care if I have to pay every week for the rest of my life if I know he’ll make it. From what I have found in talking to others is vets want the cash up front if you do not have an established relationship. I had to save it but did it do any excellent at all? I have been up all night trying to concoct a solution, any help would be greatly appreciated. I also know that a person should be prepared for the responsibility of any life, and I thought I had my t’s crossed and my i’s dotted. Nothing could have prepared me for this, and I know all in this area responsibility because I have 3 children. What are the options?
Thanks for all the help so far. I am going to call around all through habitual business hours and clarify the tale and see if what cash I do have will get him proper care. It is right that if I cannot afford him to get him the care he needs as long as nobody hurts him. I never knew this could be this hard. I did do the right thing by taking him atleast for the moment. I hope.
Thanks again to everyone giving me a crash course in puppy 101. I did report the incident to the humane society, gave the take up, and took pictures of the puppy just incase. To the person who said that I was less than smart for purchasing the puppy, it was free. Even if it weren’t I would have dog naped it or found a way to get it out. If you can see an animal in this shape up and turn your back on it, you really should not be a pet owner. That is my opinion. People make choices in life, if I had left the puppy how would I know that it would still be okay. This way I know he is excellent for now.

Just take the baby to the vet.
He will not survive without immediate vet care.

The main thing is to get him some excellent quality nutrition, but if he shows cryptogram of really being ill you will have to find a way to have him seen by the vet.

Take it to the doctors!!
And you should take your case to an attorney, that is so incorrect!!

I really reckon you need to speak to a no kill shelter or humane society in this area getting proper care for this dog until you are in a financial position to take care of him. I know you are trying to do the right thing but the dog needs proper care now. The shelter will keep you posted on progress I’m sure. You cannot do the impossible! Excellent luck

if you are in Britain you can take him to the PDSA and they will help you for nothing.

they won’t place him to sleep except they feel it’s absolutely necessary.

take him to a vets straight away and clarify to them the situation and see if they can help. at worse you could use cash from a family member as it is vital that the dog gets proper care. are there any animal rescue centres you could contact tyhough in the meantime, as if the family you got the dog from has other dogs, then they could not be looking after them properly either. dogs aren’t a lot in cost, and you covered all the vital necesties and things it would need, you just didin’t expect it to be ill when it came to you.
excellent luck and i hope your new puppy gets better and you can keep him =]

i reckon your a very excellent person for what you did, as many people would have just twisted away from it, the pdsa will help you and i reckon you did all the right things by building sure u were prepaired before you got the dog, when i went to get my westie, he was in a outhouse at the back of the garden, all on his own, no parents no siblings, i still reckon the breeder was abit dogdy, and ive questioned people around the area in this area the breeder but no one seems to no in this area him

Wow the initially thing to do is to keep feeding this small pup! If he has any worms you will see them in his stools and even in his vomit if he does vomit. His coat could just be dreadful looking from lack of excellent nutrition. I would be alternative up all his stools as soon as he goes and disposing of it. Just to be safe! Make sure you wash your hands too.
As soon as you can get the pup vet checked! Right now he needs to be fed! I would give him numerous small meals through the day. Like 4 to start with. Lots of water at all times.
Call vets in your area and pick one that can work with you. Do not go by what others tell you. Some humane societies also have vet clinics right there also. They provide vet care at a reduced cost.
The pup needs to be seen. This way you will know for sure what is and isn’t going on with the pup.
Do you even know what breed this pup may be or even how ancient???
Initially thing is food then off to the vets! It is incredible how quickly pups bounce back with excellent food and a excellent home!

Oh. my. What a horrible tale. I feel for your puppy. I bought two cats from a shelter many being ago and one died, the other had ringworms. They were both very sick. Contact your local police and show them your pup. Tell them that you will do everything in your power to help this one, but that there are others there. Since they didn’t give you thier names, give them directions to the house.
You can try putting the pup on some rice with chicken broth. Just don’t feed him much at a time. Best left for small and frequent meals to regain his strength. You can also add some chicken, chicken livers, boiled hamburger to the mix.
Keep him warm and near you all the time. He might soil the bed, but your warmth with help him recoup what he’s lost.
Poor puppy. Report these people as they should not be rescueing any thing other than thier own sanity. What mean people are out there today??? How cruel?
Some vets will let you pay on payment, some won’t. If you are local, it’s your best bet.
I pray for your puppy.

Just because you saw wormer on a counter doesn’t mean they ever really gave the pup anyhow. He most likely does have worms,.He needs a vet exam.Sounds like he may have luxating patellas if he is a small breed and having distress with his back legs as you say.The vet will check his heart and overall health. If the pup is up to it he will give you dewormer and possibly antibiotic.Could be coccidia and/or giardia. All these will cause mucous in the stool and you will need a supplement to get him more nutrition quicker, like Nutri-Stat.When you feed him you need to feed numerous small meals at a time so you do not overload his stomach which appears it isn’t used to much food.

Are you sure they gave the puppy the worm medicine? That sounds like tape worms. look to see if they are moving, if not, he is probably expelling the dead ones and hopefully he will be better soon. It does take a day or so for the worm medicine to work. His gums being pale means the parasites have just in this area drained his blood. He is pale. This shape up will kill a puppy in a small time.
With the puppy being so weak and skinny besides the obvious worms, I would bet the people didn’t feed the dogs seperately and the pup barely got any food because of the huge dogs. To help him learn to eat slower, hand feed him a small at a time, waiting a few seconds before you drop another bit into the bowl. He had to learn to eat quick to get anything before the huge dogs got it all. You will have to train him to eat slower or his food will pass out too quick and he won’t get the proper nutrition. This is very vital for your puppy’s health.
Just a bit of time may be what is needed for this puppy. Give him plenty of like and just take care of him.

have the vet check him over and do blood tests, this pup sounds like he was malnitritioned and ignored for most of its life and with proper care and excellent food he will get stronger. worms are common and to find the right ones are a must and rule out tape worms. get him the proper meds for his consequence and size.he might of been confinded to one area and his legs just are not strong until he gets built up.cook up some liver or organ meats and feed this to him a few times a week to get his blood nice and full of iron. his stomach is not use to food so small parts numerous times a day is a excellent way to get him use to eatting right.add fish oil caps and u can give him a garlic pill with his meals once a day also.when ur pup gets use to his new home and bonding with u he will get better but take him in for a excellent check up and all the proper shots and doses.i have seen many scranny pups and dogs like this and with lots of like, excellent food and care they become healthy and pleased in no time. excellent luck

Call your local ASPCA and City Animal control or no matter what might be comparable where you live and question them if they have a low cost clinic. Some spay and neuter clinics do, too. It will still cost, but won’t be nearly so much. Another possibility is to call some Vet clinics and clarify that you have rescued a dog from poor conditions but don’t have a lot of cash to start treatment at this time, can they help you by waiving office fee because you need de-worming medicine, initially shots and the puppy is very skinny and somewhat weak.
You might call 20 Vets and 19 of them say NO. One might agree especially since it is a rescue.
You could also walk in to a few clinics and question because it is harder to say no when you walk in there.
There can be a huge cost difference between clinics. There is a clinic I know that is in a ritzy area of town and had inexperienced Vets. Their prices are sky high. For the same Vet needs, there are clinics in poor areas of town that treat the same conditions for far, far less but they have seasoned, fantastic Vets! So shop around.
Tell the Vet that the dog has the white grainy looking material in the stool since this sounds like tapeworm and they might not give you medicine for these (not the same as other worming medicine) if you don’t.
Especially if they are giving meds because of obvious worms but without doing fecal exam.
If the pup has fleas, the Vet can give you something for that and tell you what to do to keep up on flea prevention as well as heartworm prevention. Heartworms are treated with another medication and some topical flea preventions keep heartworm at bay as well.
Excellent luck with your pup. I can say that with three throw-aways that we got as pups, it was so rewarding to see their health turn around and they so be thankful for it! They are the best dogs ever.
